Betty L. Hurley

July 2, 1939 - October 11, 2025

Celebration of Life

Betty L. Hurley, 86, of Kapolei, Hawai’i died October 11, 2025. Raised in Wisconsin, Betty was an accomplished writer, published poet, church organist, pianist, singer, songwriter, artist, award wining gardener, trained Radiological Technician, Lifeguard, and skilled secretary.

Betty worked her way through college, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education with honors and a Master of Arts degree in Education with honors and a Master of Arts degree in Literacy Instruction from Michigan State University. Betty furthered her life-of-service career in Education and taught at Averill Elementary in Lansing, MI and Divine Child School in Dearborn, MI for many years.

Betty also fulfilled her dream of moving to Hawai’i to live and continued to inspire keiki of all ages while on the Big Island at Ho’okena Elementary and Kealakehe High School, then moving to Oahu to work at Pearl Harbor Ka’i Elementary.

Betty is survived by her husband of 63 years, Bob Hurley of Kapolei, Hawai’i and daughters Lori (Doug) Wright and Cheryl (Don) Lewis. She is also survived by her 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, many brothers and sister-in-laws as well as wonderful nieces and nephews and ohana from Hawai’i.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Laura Harmacek, her Aunts, Veronica and Ann, her natural mother, Catherine, and her loving sisters, Mary Ann Heinz and Catherine Alice Doherty.

Visitation 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 24th at Barbers Point Beach Cottages on Eisenhower Rd, Ewa Beach, HI 96707 (Cottage Bldg #1943, please park in main lot area and enter from beachside).

A Catholic Mass funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 25th at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 91-1298 Renton Road, Ewa Beach, HI 96706 with a Celebration of Life reception immediately following until 3:00 p.m. at 60-Fore Bar & Grill’s back patio located at Barbers Point Golf Course, 2249 Essex Road, Kapolei, HI 96707. Aloha Attire.

Donations accepted in lieu of flowers to Hawai’i Literacy.
