Celebration of Life

DANIEL SAMPSON: HIS JOURNEY Daniel’s life began on September 7, 1988, in Detroit, Michigan, where he was born to loving parents who welcomed him with anticipation and joy. From the very beginning, his bright smile reflected a genuine zest for life. His light brought immense happiness to those around him. His early years were filled with playfulness and attentive curiosity. Daniel’s hearty appetite fueled rapid developmental milestones. His exuberance was often on full display, especially when seeing his mother, whom he adored. Shortly after his first birthday, Daniel moved with his mother and maternal grandparents to Altadena, California, where he attended elementary school. He excelled academically and was frequently recognized for both scholastic achievement and exemplary citizenship. During these years, he also enjoyed playing in the AYSO soccer league. On January 4, 1995, the family endured a significant loss when Daniel’s maternal grandfather, Clarence Theodis Richardson, passed away. Without Clarence, the family’s financial landscape was deeply impacted, and Bethany abruptly found herself navigating life as a true single parent. During this period, Daniel lived primarily with his father in Long Beach, California. Despite not living with his mother during that time, they maintained a healthy and supportive bond. A few years later when circumstances improved, Daniel returned to live with his mother, continuing his middle school years in Long Beach and completing them at Portola Middle School in Tarzana, California. Known for his magnetic personality, he formed many friendships, participated in theater, and demonstrated notable talent in hip-hop dance. Daniel was a child actor who showed his talent in an independent film alongside Loretta Devine and appeared in a video starring Macy Gray. Daniel also ran track as a member of the West Valley Eagles. Daniel demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age. At just 8 years old, he organized a yard sale of his toys and clothes, rising at dawn to carefully arrange and merchandise each item. During middle school, he had his mother take him to Smart & Final to purchase candy wholesale, which he sold to his peers on campus. On another occasion, Daniel planned and executed a sale of faux Tiffany & Company jewelry at his Aunt Sonya’s home—a “pop-up” before the term even existed.
Endowed with a vibrant spirit of curiosity and passion that touched every aspect of his life, Daniel embraced learning and adventure. He and his mother cherished “Adventure Saturdays,” exploring together new foods, cultural experiences, and local events. In elementary school, he delighted in dinosaurs; in middle school, he immersed himself in Egyptian and Greek mythology; and later pursued African cultural studies to deepen his understanding of his rich heritage. As a high school student, Daniel participated in a Toyota-sponsored technology mentorship program in collaboration with the Urban League, nurturing his love of innovation and technology. Ever resourceful, Daniel was constantly imagining ways to create and innovate—always seeking original paths from idea to action. This extended into the kitchen, where he became an excellent cook and explored the culinary arts in high school, drawing inspiration from chefs such as Emeril Lagasse and Ina Garten. His passions included a love of amusement parks, where he delighted in every roller coaster and carnival game. While Daniel was in high school, his mother met the love of her life, Dr. Carlton Sampson, who became the father Daniel needed. Carlton embraced Daniel as his own, nurturing him with wisdom, guidance, and steadfast support. He ensured Daniel had every opportunity to thrive emotionally, spiritually, and financially, thereby fostering a strong and healthy father–son bond. When Daniel turned 18, he asked Carlton to formally adopt him, making official a profound relationship rooted in love, respect, and choice. That foundation largely shaped the person he became. Daniel possessed a strong humanitarian spirit. He traveled to Kenya with Heritage Missions, parbcipabng in outreach efforts that included distribubng clothing and assisbng with school-building projects. His appreciabon for cultural exchange also led him to Australia with People-to-People Ambassadors, where he engaged in immersive experiences such as homestays, educabonal tours, and community visits. Daniel adended High Tech Los Angeles before transferring to Calabasas High School. He later followed his father’s footsteps leading to his father’s alma mater, Pine Forge Academy in Pennsylvania, graduabng in 2006. While there, he developed a deep love for music, parbcipabng in choir and taking voice lessons. He was especially fond of popular arbsts Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Oleta Adams, as well as 1990s R&B arbsts.
Following graduabon, Daniel began his higher educabon at Santa Monica College. Ever the journeyman, college was no different. His academic path included tours of Pacific Union College, Pace University, and Oakwood University. Ulbmately, he completed his studies in May 2013, earning a Bachelor of Science in Markebng at Alabama A&M University. Daniel’s professional life began in Huntsville, Alabama, and carried him to Houston, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Honolulu. Wherever he worked, coworkers described him as intelligent, kind, and humorous, with an unwavering work ethic. Daniel’s knowledge of fashion history, origin, and inspirabon far transcended that of someone with merely good taste. He possessed an encyclopedic understanding of luxury fashion houses—their creabve directors, crajsmanship, and cultural influence. Daniel didn’t just wear clothing; he immersed himself in it. He revered quality, construcbon, and design, and could effortlessly tell you everything you ever wanted to know about a luxury brand—from its heritage to its soul. In his career, Daniel achieved remarkable success in luxury retail, working with presbgious brands such as Prada, Jimmy Choo, and Nordstrom. He broke storewide sales records and earned recognibon among the nabon’s top performers. Ajer transiboning out of retail, he quickly found success as a talent engagement manager, with a second promobon within reach in less than a year. Daniel also displayed arbsbc genius, bringing innovabon and elegance to every event he conceptualized. His remarkable vision and excepbonal sense of style shone brilliantly when he served as creabve execubve producer for Carlton’s and Bethany’s unforgedable respecbve 50th birthday celebrabons.
