Rita Nohea Makini Gora, of Honolulu, passed surrounded in song by her loving family on August 24, 2022. Born on March 22, 1927 to Henry & Gertrude (Aiu) Makini, she [Rita] was the great, great, great grand-daughter of Kamehameha I. A 1946 graduate of Sacred Hearts Academy, she worked as a secretary for the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts at St. Anthony's Home until she married Francis P. Gora on July 2, 1955. Rita was a busy home maker with 7 children, yet she still found time to attend her children's sporting events, bowled in multiple leagues, played cards with friends, traveled with Kupuna, and volunteered at SHA and also her beloved parish, Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa. She LOVED to HULA and was willing to do so at any time. Rita was active in many Hawaiian community civic clubs and organizations including Ahahui Ka'ahumanu, The Royal Order of Kamehameha 'Ekahi Na Wahine O Kamehameha, Hale O Na Ali'i, Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu and Ka Lei Papahi o Kakuhihewa. After her husband's retirement, she taught at Ma'ema'e Elementary for 27 years, as a Kupuna in the Hawaiian Studies Program, and retired at the age of 84. She is survived by seven children: Francine, Keoua, Nohea, Imiola, Pua, Kuumea and Lawrence and hanai son Piimauna; 16 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Francis and grandbaby Thomas. Services will be held on September 15, 2022 at Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, 712 N. School St. Visitations 10am - 11:30am, Mass at Noon, Burial Valley of the Temples 2pm.
