Herbert "Herbie" Kealii (Moss Jr.) Gradle

Herbert "Herbie" Kealii (Moss Jr.) Gradle, 79, of ʻEwa Beach, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, at The Queen's Medical Center – West Oʻahu.

Born in the Territory of Hawaiʻi at Kapiʻolani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital, Herbie was a proud graduate of Northern Burlington County Regional High School in Mansfield Township, New Jersey where he excelled as a baseball player. He also served in military U.S. Army.

Herbie was a humble, intelligent man with a quick wit and an unforgettable sense of humor. A true sports enthusiast, he had a lifelong passion for baseball and earned recognition as an All-Star player. He found great joy in coaching Pearl City Little League and Girls Bobby Sox and remained active in many sports throughout his years with PWUC, participating in baseball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and cycling. Later in life, he embraced paddling with Haleakalā Canoe Club, as well as bowling and golfing.

To his family, Herbie was known as the official family mechanic. No matter whose car needed repair, he was always willing to lend a hand. He shared his knowledge and love of Volkswagen vehicles with his son, teaching him everything he knew. His generosity, patience, and willingness to help others will be remembered by all who knew him.

Herbie is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Joyce W. (Keaulana); son, Michael K. (Janine K. P. ) Gradle; granddaughters, Rachel K. Gradle (Noel James G.) and Rochelle K. Gradle; grandson, Hiram "Ekolu" M. Kahele III; great-grandsons, Zayden K. Salazar, Zansten K. Salazar, Zayne T. K. Geronimo, and Zion T. K. L. Geronimo; great-granddaughters, Zanica H. M. Geronimo and Zaronica H. M. Geronimo; brother, Michael K. Gradle; sisters, Amber Saniatan, Christina "Tina" McAngus, and Jo Marie Holt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
